Myth
Visual effects (VFX) are often considered too costly for independent productions with low to medium budgets (typically for less than $1.5 million and $10 million, respectively). As a result, screenwriters minimize or eliminate VFX from their stories.

Truth
With today’s software and hardware advances, talented digital artists, high-speed internet, and careful shot planning and supervision, feature-quality VFX can be produced within low to medium budgets, anywhere in the world. Compromises due to budget may be required, but the bottom line is: it is possible to include VFX on a budget. I don’t believe in gratuitous VFX at the expense of story. However, properly produced VFX can greatly enhance a production and free your story.

Goal
I hope to demonstrate to independent producers that VFX can play an important role in their productions, even by adding one VFX enhanced shot. I’d also hope to educate emerging VFX artists. If what is found here is useful on some level, I’ve done my job. If you’d like to add VFX to your production, or even just talk about VFX, please contact me or post a comment.
